This guide is designed to help you prepare for your session and understand the unique process of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
The "Light-Touch" Approach: Unlike a standard massage, MLD uses a very specific, feather-light pressure. We focus on the skin and the superficial tissue just beneath it, using rhythmic, stretching motions to "wake up" your lymphatic vessels.
A Deeply Relaxing Experience: Because the strokes are slow and repetitive, most clients find the session incredibly soothing for the nervous system. It is very common to fall into a light sleep during treatment.
The "Opening" Sequence: We always start by "clearing" the main lymph node clusters in the neck and trunk—even if you are only seeking help for a specific limb. This ensures there is an open pathway for the fluid to travel.
Professional Care: As an Occupational Therapist with specialized certification, I monitor your skin health and fluid volume throughout the session to ensure the most effective clinical outcome.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please arrive well-hydrated. Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before your session, as we will be working on areas of the abdomen that house many lymph nodes.
What should I wear?
For the most effective treatment, the techniques are performed directly on the skin. You will be professionally draped with sheets at all times, with only the area being worked on exposed. However, if you prefer to remain partially clothed in loose-fitting garments, we can adapt the treatment to your comfort level.
How will I feel afterward?
Most clients feel lighter and more relaxed. Because the treatment stimulates fluid movement, you will likely need to use the restroom more frequently over the next few hours. We recommend drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day to let your body process the shift.
How many sessions do I need?
This depends entirely on your goals. For acute post-surgical swelling, a series of frequent sessions may be recommended. For general wellness, immune support, or skincare maintenance, a monthly session is often ideal.
Are there any contraindications?
Lymphatic massage is very safe, but it is not recommended for individuals currently experiencing an acute infection (fever), untreated congestive heart failure, or active blood clots. If you have a complex medical history, we will review it during your initial consultation.
To support your lymphatic system between appointments, we recommend:
Gentle Movement: A 10-minute walk or light stretching helps keep fluid moving.
Herbal Support: Incorporating natural, plant-based salves can help soothe the skin and support the tissues we worked on during your session.
Deep Breathing: Simple diaphragmatic breathing acts as a natural "pump" for the deep lymphatic channels in your chest.
